This lesson provides step-by-step guidance on creating a Graphing Lines item in the Item Bank. This item type requires students to draw line segments on a graph according to given information. This question type can be administered online only, does not offer partial credit, and is automatically scored.
Before You Begin
This lesson begins assuming that users have the permissions to create new Item Bank items, and are familiar with the item creation process. To learn more about creating Item Bank items, take a look at the Create Items article.
Create Graphing Lines Item
- Select the Graphing Lines item type.
- (Optional) Choose one or more passages by selecting Link Passage.
- Passages must be published and located in the same Work Space to be available for linking.
- Use the slider to determine if the item should Include Teacher Instructions.
- If the slider is set to Yes, enter teacher instructions into the text box.
- Enter the Question in the text box.
- The Question may also include audio, video, images, equations, or tables, as shown in the CKEditor formatting tools. Take a look at CKEditor Formatting Tools for Staff Users for more details.
- Enter the Total Possible Points that students can earn on the item.
- Select the # of Lines that students will need to plot on the graph to answer the item.
- Enter the X Axis parameters to build the desired graph where students will plot their lines.
- X Axis Title: Enter the label that students will see for the X Axis. This may simply be X or X Axis, or it may represent Time or Distance, such as in a word problem.
- X Axis Min. Value: Enter the lowest X Axis value; this must be 0 or a negative number for the Y Axis to display.
- X Axis Max. Value: Enter the highest X Axis value; this must be 0 or a positive number for the Y Axis to display.
- X Axis Step Value: The step value determines the interval between grid lines and labels, and may need to be adjusted to be larger or smaller based on the Min and Max Axis values.
- Enter the Y Axis parameters of the graph.
- Y Axis Title: Enter the label that students will see for the Y Axis. This may simply be Y or Y Axis, or it may represent Time or Distance, such as in a word problem.
- Y Axis Min. Value: Enter the lowest Y Axis value; this must be 0 or a negative number for the X Axis to display.
- Y Axis Max. Value: Enter the highest Y Axis value; this must be 0 or a positive number for the X Axis to display.
- Y Axis Step Value: The step value determines the interval between grid lines and labels, and may need to be adjusted to be larger or smaller based on the Min and Max Axis values.
- Select a Square, Tall, or Wide Grid Height & Width that will best fit the entered grid parameters, based on if the Min and Max X and Y Axis values are equal, or if one axis is larger than the other.
- Line Choices automatically populate based on the # of Lines selected in step 6. Enter the Start Point Coordinates of each line that students will need to plot on the graph.
- Enter the End Point Coordinates of each line that students will need to plot.
- Select the trashcan icon to delete a Line Choice.
- Select Add Choice to add another Line Choice.
- The # of Lines will update automatically whenever a Line Choice is deleted or added to the list, to reflect the current number of Line Choices.
- Select Save to save the item progress, or select Next to save and continue to the next step.
