This lesson provides step-by-step guidance on creating a Hot Spot item in the Item Bank. This item type requires students to select the correct answer(s) by selecting on one or more hot spots or images. This question type can be administered online only, offers relative scoring, and is automatically scored.
Before You Begin
This lesson begins assuming that users have the permissions to create new Item Bank items, and are familiar with the item creation process. To learn more about creating Item Bank items, take a look at the Create Items article.
Create Hot Spot Item
General Item Settings and Question Creation
- Select the Hot Spot item type.
- (Optional) Choose one or more passages by selecting Link Passage.
- Passages must be published and located in the same Work Space to be available for linking.
- Use the slider to determine if the item should Include Teacher Instructions.
- If the slider is set to Yes, enter teacher instructions into the text box.
- Select the eye icon to view a Hot Spot Example.
- Enter the Question in the text box.
- The Question may also include audio, video, images, equations, or tables, as shown in the CKEditor formatting tools. Take a look at CKEditor Formatting Tools for Staff Users for more details.
- Limit # of Choices: Limits the number of identifiers within the item that students can select as correct answers. This number can never be less than the number of correct answers in the item, but may be higher. Select the number of choices students should be allowed to select as correct.
- Select the Scoring Model that should be used to calculate the score for the item. Selecting All or Nothing awards points only when all answers are correct, and selecting Relative associates points relative to the number of correct answers selected.
- Enter the Total Possible Points students can earn on this item.
- Select Upload Hot Spot Image to upload a saved image that the hot spots can be placed upon.
Hot Spot Image Setup
- The Image Properties window opens, allowing the upload of the appropriate image (.GIF, .PNG, .JPG or .JPEG format). Drag the image file to the indicated area, or select within the window to open the file selector.
- Select Update Hot Spot Image to open the Image Properties window again to edit or replace the current image.
- Use the tools to select where the hot spots should be.
- The Rectangle, Ellipse, and free-form Polygon tools can be used to create hot spot areas.
- Use the Select cursor to resize and move already created hot spot areas.
- Select the Mark as Correct checkmark and then select a hot spot to mark it as a correct answer.
- Select the Mark as Incorrect X icon and then select a hot spot to mark it as incorrect.
- Select the Delete Selected Object(s) trashcan icon and then select a hot spot to delete it.
- Hot spots marked as correct highlight in green. Hot spots marked as incorrect highlight in grey.
- Select Preview to view how the item will display in the Student Portal, with correct answers.
