This lesson provides step-by-step guidance on creating a Matching Table item in the Item Bank. This item type requires students to classify a series of prompts, which may include text, images, numerals, and/or equations, into one or more categories. This question type can be administered online only, does not offer partial credit, and is automatically scored.
Before You Begin
This lesson begins assuming that users have the permissions to create new Item Bank items, and are familiar with the item creation process. To learn more about creating Item Bank items, take a look at the Create Items article.
Create Matching Table Item
General Item Settings and Question Creation
- Select the Matching Table item type.
- (Optional) Choose one or more passages by selecting Link Passage.
- Passages must be published and located in the same Work Space to be available for linking.
- Use the slider to determine if the item should Include Teacher Instructions.
- If the slider is set to Yes, enter teacher instructions into the text box.
- Enter the Total Possible Points students can earn on the item.
- Enter the Question in the text box.
- The Question may also include audio, video, images, equations, or tables, as shown in the CKEditor formatting tools. Take a look at CKEditor Formatting Tools for Staff Users for more details.
Define Questions
- Enter how many Columns the table should have. The first column represents the question, and the others represent the answer choices.
- The table must have three columns minimum, and can have up to 10 columns maximum.
- Select the desired Response Type from the dropdown.
- Radio - One Answer: Students can answer each prompt with only a single answer.
- Checkbox - Multiple Answer: Students can answer each prompt with multiple answers.
- (Optional) Enter a Column Label for Column 1, or remove the text to leave the Column header blank.
- Enter Column Labels for each answer Column header.
- Each answer Column must have a unique text label.
- Enter a prompt for each row in the Question Text fields.
- Each row included in the table must have a unique prompt in the Question Text field.
- Select the correct answer radio button or checkbox for each row.
- Select and drag the two-line icon to rearrange the question prompt rows.
- Select the trashcan icon to delete a row.
- Select Add Another Row to add further rows.
- (Optional) Add Rationale for the correct answers.
- Select Save to save the item progress, or select Next to save and continue to the next step.
