Multi-Part – SchoolCity

This lesson provides step-by-step guidance on creating a Multi-Part item in the Item Bank. This item type can have between two and ten parts, which can vary question type, and can include a mix of manual and automatically scored item types. This question type can be administered online and on paper, depending on the included question types. Partial and dependent scoring are available.

Before You Begin

This lesson begins assuming that users have the permissions to create new Item Bank items, and are familiar with the item creation process. To learn more about creating Item Bank items, take a look at the Create Items article.

Create Multi-Part Item

An example Multi-Part item creation screen, with Item Type labeled as step 1, Multi-Part Labels labeled as step 2, Link Passage labeled as step 3, Include Teacher Instructions labeled as step 4, Partial Credit labeled as step 5, Dependent labeled as step 6, Total Possible Points labeled as step 7, the first question part tab labeled as step 8, Question Type labeled as step 9, the add tab option labeled as step 10, and the Save and Next buttons labeled as step 11.

Select the Multi-Part item type.
Select the desired Multi-Part Labels, either letters or decimal numbers.
(Optional) Choose one or more passages by selecting Link Passage.
- Passages must be published and located in the same Work Space to be available for linking.
Use the slider to determine if the item should Include Teacher Instructions.
- If the slider is set to Yes, enter teacher instructions into the text box.
Use the slider to determine if the item should allow Partial Credit scoring.
- If Partial Scoring is enabled, students can earn points for each individual part of the item.
- If Partial Scoring is disabled, points for the item are all-or-nothing, and students must earn all points for all parts to earn credit for the item.
If Partial Scoring is enabled, select the checkbox to enable Dependent scoring.
- If Dependent scoring is enabled, the score from each part within the item depends on the scores of its previous parts. If a part of the item is not fully correct, the student is not awarded a score for that part or any of the following parts of the item.
Total Possible Points is calculated based on the amount of points assigned to each item type selected.
Use the tabs to navigate between item parts. Each tab indicates the part letter or number, and the question type selected for that part.
Select the Question Type for each item part.
- The question setup for each part will populate according to the Question Type selected.
- Available Question Types include Constructed Response, Explicit Constructed Response, Gap Match, Graphic Gap Match, Graphing Lines, Graphing Points, Hot Spot, Hot Text, Inline Choice, Multiple Binary, Multiple Choice, Multiple Response, Numerical Response, Order Items, and Writing Prompt.

Select the + tab to add an additional item part. Select the X in the corner of a tab to delete that item part.
Once each question part of the item has been completed, select Save to save the item progress, or select Next to save and continue to the next step.
