This article will review the process for creating a Performance Based Assessment. The format allows staff members to set up an online scoring grid for a performance based assessment that students complete externally. It may be aligned to content standards and can include Assessment Objectives, or sub scores.
Where to Start
- From the Top Menu Bar Grid icon, click the Assessments tile.
- Use the green Create Assessments dropdown menu located in the upper right corner to select Performance Based.
- School Year - The new assessment will default to the school year as set in My Preferences. To select another year, click on the current year and select the desired year from the drop down.
- Assessment Level - Depending on your role, you may be able to create assessments at the School and/or District level. Select the level appropriate for your assessment, if a selection is available.
- Assessment Name - Enter the assessment name. The assessment name must be unique and clear to you and anyone you may decide to share with.
- Subject - Select the subject from the drop-down menu. You can add other subjects in the next step, if desired.
- Existing Collection - (Optional) Select an existing Collect to save the assessment to.
- PLC - (Optional) Select a PLC to filter the student population. If a PLC is chosen, Student Selection will be based on the students rostered to the collective PLC.
- Include Standards - (Optional) Align your assessment to content standards. Upon doing so, a Standards step will be added to the assessment setup breadcrumb trail.
- Include Notes - Allows staff users to enter up to 3000 character notes/observations for a student at the time of score entry for Performance Based assessments. Currently, the notes will only be teacher-facing and students will not see the notes within the Student Portal. A Performance Based assessment can contain a mix of regular scoring methods and notes entry or can be notes entry only. When selected, Notes will display as a column in the Performance Based Score Entry screen. Saved notes will appear within the Test Results report and the teacher-facing Student History Report.
- Include Assessment Objectives - (Optional) Your assessment may include one or more objectives (or sub-scores). Slide No to Yes. Upon doing so, an Objectives step will be added to the assessment setup breadcrumb trail.
- Enter Rubric - (Optional) Slide No to Yes, and either write the rubric in the textbox, or upload an existing rubric from your desktop (must be a PDF). The rubric you attach will display as a reference for staff to refer to while entering scores. If your assessment does include Objectives, a scoring rubric for each Objective may be entered in the Objectives step.
The breadcrumb arrow links for the different assessment setup screens. As you complete each step, it will be denoted in the breadcrumb with a green check which serves as a visual cue of your progress. The current step is highlighted in green.
Score Labels and Score Types
- Score Label - Determine the Score Label for the assessment. Default drop down menu options include Raw Score, Percent Correct, Scale Score or Performance Level. You may also create a new label.
- Score Type - Determine the Score Type for the assessment. There are three Score Type options to choose from: Numeric, Alpha and List. If you want to use Raw Score as your Score Label, then the Score Type would be Numeric.
Value - Range or Selected Values
- Range - Determine the Range of the scores for the selected Score Type. Select the 'Prevent Decimal Entry' checkbox to restrict score entry to whole number values.
- Selected Values - Allows users to select specific values between 0-999 (e.g., 0,2,4,6 or 0,1,2,3). Users will see button options in the score entry screen when there are 4 or fewer options to select from. A dropdown will appear when there are greater than 4 options and whole number selections are required. Text box entry will remain for Ranges that allow decimal entry.
If there are no Objectives, the Score Label and Score Type must be selected for the assessment in this step. If there are Objectives, the Score Label and Score Type will be selected for each Objective in the Objectives step. If you would like to calculate an Overall Score, each objective must have the same Score Label, and the Score Type must be Numeric. The Range can vary.
- Determine how students should be scheduled to the assessment:
- Schedule all students to take this assessment - If you are a teacher level user, then all students are all the students on your roster(s). If you are a school level user, then all students are all rostered students at your school. If you are a district level user, then all students are all students across the district.
- Schedule students by grade level - Use this option if you want only students in a specific grade(s) to take the assessment. Check the box(es) of the grade(s) you wish to schedule
- Schedule students by Course Group or Course - Use this option if you have created Course Groups in the Group Manager or would like only students in a specific Course(s) to take the assessment
- Schedule students by Student Group - Choose this option if you have created student groups in the Group Manager and want only those students to take the assessment
- Select Next to save and continue to the next step based on other selections in the Assessment Info screen or select Save to save progress and return to the assessment later.
Setup for Multiple Grades (Optional)
Setup for Multiple Grade Grade(s)combines unique grade level assessments into a single, multi-grade assessment. If selected, students will not be able to take the assessment online.
- Toggle Setup for Multiple Assessment Grade(s) to Yes.
- Select the Grade(s) for the assessment.
- Select how to schedule students for each grade selected.
