The Student Portal is the User Interface used by students to take online assessments. There are a variety of tools that may be available for an assessment. Available tools are determined by the Test Administrator and/or the Test Creator. This article reviews the Writing Checklist tool that can be added to assessments that includes Writing Prompt or Constructed Response Items. This tool provides a checklist that allows students to mark objectives as complete for expository or persuasive writing.
Enabling Online Markup for an Item
- On the Properties tab of item creation, use the checkbox to select Writing Checklists.
- Select Save.
- Select Preview & Publish tab.
- Select Online Markup.

- Under Markup Options, select Checklist.
- Select the checklist icon.

- Use the dropdown menu to select a Writing Checklist.
- Select Save.
Select a Writing Checklist when Creating an Assessment
- After the item has been added to an assessment, on the Summary step of Assessment Creation, select Online Markup.

- Under Markup Options, select Checklist.
- Select the checklist icon.

- Use the dropdown menu to select a Writing Checklist.
- Select Save.
Enabling Online Markup for an Assessment
- On the Setup step of Assessment Creation, use the slider to show Online Settings.

- Under Other Tools, use the checkbox to select Writing Checklists.
- Use the radio button to unlock the tool.
Unlocking a tool controls whether users administering the assessment can update the online setting for the assessment during Online Administration (i.e., locked padlock prevents a test administrator from changing the setting).
Student View

- Select the Writing Checklist icon.

- Use the checkboxes to check each objective as they are complete.
- Select the X to exit the checklist and go back to the assessment.
- Select Clear to remove all checkmarks.
