After completing assessment the setup Filters screen for an Item Bank assessment, users proceed to the Items screen. In this article we will review the steps to select items to add to your assessment.
Depending on the criteria selected in the Filters step, the process for selecting items may vary from the example shown.
Selecting Items for an Item Bank Assessment

Items tab - The items and passages shown match your selected criteria from the Filters step.

Show/Hide Filters - Click on the Show/Hide Filters button to display more information about the matching items.

Modify - If you need to revise the chosen criteria, click Modify to return to the previous step.
- When the Items Used box is checked and the Items Not Used box in unchecked, then the Assessments that include an item can be viewed. Click the Item in Use symbol to view the Items in Use - Assessment List.
- + Create - The + Create button displays on every Item Bank Setup screen and permits the test author to create both Items and Passages "on the fly" while building an assessment.

Click the gear icon in the top right-hand corner, and a drop-down list of additional filters will appear.

Add/Remove Filters: You can further filter the original set of items and passages by selecting one or more filters. Select the desired filter(s) from the list by checking the box.
- The Items screen Show/Hide Filters option can be applied to exclude questions that are restricted to just one method of delivery. Click the upper right corner Gear icon and check "Administration Methods" to add the additional filter row. This will allow you to view items that are available for both online and paper delivery and those that are limited to just one format.

Update: Click Update to apply the new filters.
- An additional row for each filter will appear under the Standards row. The number of items and passages aligned to the selected standards within the specific filter will display.
- Starting from top to bottom, click on any filter, or combination of filters to narrow your item selection. Unclick the selected filter to remove it and then reselect another. At any time, you can open the gear icon to remove any filters that you no longer want to see.
Item Preview / Passage Summary
- Click the View icon (eye) to see the Item Details.
- View the Item Details on the right. Use the scroll bar to view all properties and aligned standards.
- View the Rationale (if available) as to why students might select the incorrect answers.
- Click the Passage name in blue font to preview it. You can view all items connected to the chosen passage, items aligned to other standards, and passage properties.
Preview Passage and Properties:
- Click the Passages tab to view each passage and associated items. Scroll down to view all items.
- Click Properties to view details about the passage.
- Export to PDF by clicking the download icon.
- Provide Item Feedback: If you discover an issue or find an error in an item – grammar, conventions, standards-alignment, incorrect answer, or other problem, please let SchoolCity know by clicking the red exclamation point icon to open the feedback form. Your account name and email address are pre-populated. Enter your comments and click the green Send Request button.
Selecting Items:
Some items are identified as Paper Only or Online Only. If a user selects a Paper Only or Online Only item when building an Item Bank assessment, they will receive an alert message informing them that they have selected an item that is not available for both online and paper delivery.
In addition, as noted earlier in this article, when selecting items for an assessment, the Items screen Show/Hide Filters option can be applied to exclude questions that are restricted to just one method of delivery. Upon clicking the Show/Hide Filters button, you will see rows for Item Banks, Subjects, Grades and Standards. Click the upper right corner Gear icon and check "Administration Methods" to add the additional filter row.
- Check the open box next to the item number to select it. The item is selected when a white check appears in a green box.
- A Selected Items tab will appear as soon as the first item is selected. As you continue building your assessment, click this tab to view all selected items. Items can be deleted by unchecking the box next to the Item Name.
- Previous/Save/Next: Click Next after you have selected all items and you wish to continue with your assessment creation. Your work will be automatically saved. If you are done with your selections and wish to exit the system until a later time, click Save. If you need to go back to the previous step, click Previous.
Order Items & Add Instructions

Remove All Items - Select this option to quickly remove all selected items. Upon clicking the Remove All Items button, an alert prompt will display asking users to confirm that they want to proceed with the action.

Order Items & Add Instructions - Clicking the blue Order Items & Add Instructions button opens a fullscreen pop-up window with a two column layout -- the Item List column on the left and a PDF test booklet preview on the right.

Items Numbering - The items appear in the order they were selected in the previous step. You can reorder the items automatically or manually.
- Auto - allows you to reorder by dragging and dropping items into the preferred order.

Manual - allows you to reorder the items by typing in the empty number cell beside each item.

Test Booklet Preview - Click the orange arrow to maximize the preview.

2 Column Layout - Slide the toggle from No to Yes to reorganize the items into two columns (if allowed by item type).
- Click Save and Update Test Booklet to view the changes you've made.

Custom Instructions - Click Custom Instructions to organize the Test Booklet into sections with specific instructions. Options include:
- Number of Sections - Enter the desired number of sections, and click Update.
- Overall Instructions - Slide No to Yes to add overall instructions.
- Name each section, enter instructions, and indicate which items belong in the section.
- Click Apply Sections.
